Cristian Romero has admitted that he “wasn’t perfect” during his five-year spell at Tottenham Hotspur, but insists he always gave everything for the club as his move to Atlético Madrid has officially been confirmed.
Atlético Madrid have completed the signing of the 28-year-old Argentina international for a reported £34.2 million. Romero has signed a five-year contract with the La Liga side, bringing an end to his time in North London.
Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and quickly established himself as a key figure in the club’s defence. During his five seasons with Spurs, he made 156 appearances and played a crucial role in one of the most memorable moments in the club’s recent history.
His final appearance for Tottenham came against Sunderland in April, when he was forced off the pitch in tears after suffering a knee injury. The setback ruled him out of the club’s final six Premier League matches of the season.
His absence came during a difficult period for Spurs, who were battling to avoid relegation. Romero also faced criticism from supporters after plans emerged for him to return to Argentina to watch his boyhood club, Belgrano, compete in the Primera División Apertura final.
However, he eventually returned to England to attend Tottenham’s crucial 1-0 victory over Everton, a result that secured their Premier League survival and saw them finish 17th for a second consecutive season.
Reflecting on his time at the club, Romero acknowledged his shortcomings but maintained that his commitment to Tottenham never wavered.
“I know I wasn’t perfect. But one thing gives me peace: I always gave everything. I defended this shirt with pride and with all my heart.”
Romero’s defining moment in a Tottenham shirt came in 2025, when he helped the club end a 17-year wait for silverware. Spurs defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final to claim their first major trophy since 2008.
“When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club’s history,” Romero said.
“I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. And we did it.”
As he begins a new chapter with Atlético Madrid, Romero made it clear that his connection with Tottenham will remain deeply personal.
“I’m leaving the club, but a part of my heart will always remain here. Once I was one of you. Today, I leave as one of you forever.
“With all my love and respect. Thank you for everything.”
