Christian Eriksen's time at Wolfsburg has come to an early end, with the Denmark midfielder and the German club agreeing to terminate his contract by mutual consent.
The 34-year-old had been under contract until June 2027, but requested an early departure as he looks to remain closer to his family in Denmark. Wolfsburg confirmed that it accepted his request and that the decision was made with Eriksen's future in mind.
"At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I'm pleased that we were able to find a solution together," Eriksen said.
The decision comes three months after Eriksen collapsed during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine in June. His implantable cardioverter-defibrillator delivered a corrective shock after detecting a dangerous heart rhythm, and he has not returned to competitive football since the incident.
Wolfsburg had already announced in July that Eriksen would undergo an individual rehabilitation programme in Denmark while remaining in contact with the club and the doctors overseeing his treatment.
Eriksen's departure brings an end to a single season with Wolfsburg. He joined the club as a free agent in 2025 after leaving Manchester United and went on to make 34 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists.
His time at the club also included Wolfsburg's relegation from the Bundesliga, with the team now competing in Germany's second tier and attempting to secure an immediate return to the top flight.
Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hecking said the club believed Eriksen should have complete freedom to decide what came next.
"For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian's. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract," Hecking said.
Hecking also praised the midfielder's influence during his relatively short spell at the club, saying Eriksen had made a lasting impression on his teammates, staff and supporters.
Eriksen, who has won 151 caps for Denmark, previously played for Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Brentford. His international career also includes the 2021 cardiac arrest he suffered during Denmark's European Championship match against Finland.
For now, Eriksen will continue his rehabilitation in Denmark, with his immediate priority appearing to be spending more time close to his family. Wolfsburg said the club wishes him and his family well following the end of their relationship.
