The Football Association has charged Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik with improper conduct following his altercation with a young Portsmouth supporter earlier this month, with the case now moving into the FA's disciplinary process after Hampshire Police concluded their own inquiry into the incident.
The flashpoint occurred in the 70th minute of Cardiff's 2-0 defeat at Fratton Park on 5 September, when Bielik went to retrieve the ball from the crowd during a Championship fixture. Footage circulating on social media appeared to show the Polish defender grabbing a teenage supporter around the upper body, close to the throat, after the fan threw the ball away rather than handing it back. The fan then appeared to push back at Bielik, sparking a brief melee before he was escorted out of the ground by stewards, along with a separate supporter who had thrown a ball at Cardiff's Perry Ng. Referee Ben Speedie allowed play to continue without disciplinary action at the time.
Hampshire Police had opened an investigation shortly after the match, treating the matter as a potential common assault and, given the age of the supporter involved, a safeguarding issue. Both Portsmouth and Cardiff issued statements at the time urging caution against speculation while enquiries were ongoing, with Portsmouth stressing that the welfare of young supporters remained its top priority. The FA also confirmed early on that it was aware of the incident and would review the referee's match report.
With the police inquiry now closed, attention shifts to the FA's disciplinary process. Cardiff had previously said they were satisfied with how match officials handled the situation in real time, while Bielik's manager, Brian Barry-Murphy, defended his player after the game, claiming the defender had been slapped in the face by the supporter and praising the way officials managed the incident. Portsmouth boss John Mousinho later apologised for comments he made in the immediate aftermath, saying he felt he had been misled about exactly what had happened before speaking to the press.
Bielik, a former Arsenal academy graduate who joined Cardiff from West Bromwich Albion last month, was making just his fourth appearance for the club when the incident occurred. The case now awaits the outcome of the FA's disciplinary proceedings.
