Mbappe Explains Decision to Obscure Ceuta Message, Says He "Stands in Full Solidarity"

Kylian Mbappe has spoken out to clarify his decision to partially cover up a T-shirt message of support for the people of Ceuta before Real Madrid's match against Elche on Tuesday, insisting he stands in complete solidarity with the Spanish enclave despite his actions on the pitch.

Real Madrid players wore shirts reading "Todos somos Caballas" — "We are all Caballas," a nickname for residents of Ceuta, the Spanish autonomous city on Africa's northern coast that borders Morocco. The gesture came in the wake of a tragedy in July, when more than 100 people died as tens of thousands of migrants attempted to cross into the territory from Morocco. Mbappe, along with teammates Vinicius Jr and Ibrahima Konate, rolled their shirts up before the match, obscuring the message rather than displaying it fully.

Addressing the controversy afterward, Mbappe said he wanted to explain the situation clearly so people could understand his reasoning. He explained that wearing the shirt had been the club's decision, one the players were required to follow, but stressed that his first priority was making clear where he stood: firmly alongside Ceuta and its victims, saying that before being a footballer, he considers himself a human being first.

At the same time, Mbappe said his gesture was intended as a way of acknowledging migrants who have lost their lives or are living in difficult conditions elsewhere in the world, explaining that he didn't want to prioritise one group's suffering over another's.

He acknowledged that his actions could easily be misread. Mbappe admitted it hadn't been an easy position to take, recognising that some might interpret his gesture as opposition to the people of Ceuta. He was adamant that this wasn't the case, saying he has nothing against them and supports them fully, while explaining that he simply wanted to spare a thought for others suffering around the world as well.

Reflecting on the wider situation, Mbappe said it pains him to see suffering happening globally, describing himself as a young man who wants the best for the world and hopes the underlying situation can be resolved quickly, with his intention being to send a message of positivity and peace rather than division.
