Leeds United winger Noah Okafor says he will not play for Switzerland while Murat Yakin remains head coach, citing broken promises and a breakdown in trust. The 26-year-old confirmed the decision on Instagram, saying he is stepping away "until further notice."
The move follows a long-running dispute between Okafor and Yakin, along with national team sporting director Pierluigi Tami, which had appeared resolved before this summer's World Cup. Okafor featured just once at the tournament, coming on for 19 minutes against Algeria, and says his decision stems not from playing time but from how he felt treated by the coaching staff during the tournament, adding that he no longer feels the trust needed to continue under the current setup.
The Swiss FA confirmed it has accepted his decision, meaning he won't be considered for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against North Macedonia, Scotland and Slovenia with the fixtures forming part of Sebastien Pocognoli's first international camp as Scotland head coach.
Leeds boss Daniel Farke has backed Okafor, saying the choice was his to make and that he remains a valued, key player at the club.
