Philippe Coutinho has completed a move to Santos, linking up with close friend and Brazil international Neymar for the rest of the season. The 34-year-old playmaker had been searching for a new club since his exit from Vasco da Gama in February.
Coutinho's return to Vasco da Gama, his boyhood club, began in 2024, but he left after 81 appearances. He later opened up about the mental health struggles that pushed him to step away from the sport for a period.
Santos marked the announcement with a nostalgic touch, posting a childhood photo of Coutinho and Neymar as teenage prospects, followed by a present-day picture of the pair recreating the same pose. The club also shared footage of Coutinho's dressing-room arrival, where Neymar welcomed him with open arms. Overcome by the moment, Coutinho admitted he hoped he'd never wake up if it turned out to be a dream.
Neymar rejoined Santos the club where he first made his name in January last year. With Coutinho now on board, the two Brazilian stars will share a pitch as club teammates for the very first time, despite years of friendship and international duty together.
Coutinho's career took him from Vasco da Gama's academy to Inter Milan before he broke out at Liverpool, netting 54 goals in 201 appearances and earning a move to Barcelona in 2018 for around £142 million. He went on to play for Bayern Munich, Aston Villa, and Qatar's Al-Duhail before returning to Vasco.
His arrival at Santos gives the club a seasoned international presence up front as it pushes to strengthen its squad down the stretch and finally brings two of Brazil's most enduring football friendships together under one badge.
