Arsenal to Appeal Dowman Red Card After Carabao Cup Exit at Fleetwood

Arsenal will appeal against Max Dowman's sending-off in their Carabao Cup tie at Fleetwood on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old midfielder was shown a straight red card in the 85th minute after reacting to a heavy challenge from Fleetwood's Harrison Neal. Dowman did not fully kick out, but his foot did make contact with Neal. He was sent off for violent conduct, which the laws of the game define as using or attempting to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, whether or not contact is made. As things stand, he faces a three-match suspension.

The game finished 1-1, and League Two side Fleetwood beat the Premier League champions 5-3 on penalties. It was Dowman's second red card this month, after he was also sent off playing for England's Under-19s.

As Dowman left the pitch, Mikel Arteta gave him a scathing look and appeared to say something angrily to him. After the game, Arteta said Arsenal had been very clear in their preparation about what they needed to respect and which emotions they had to control.

The dismissal worsens Arsenal's shortage of wingers. Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis and Noni Madueke are all injured. Arteta's side are back in Premier League action away to Liverpool on Sunday.
